Types of Sedation We Offer

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

A mild sedative that helps your child relax while remaining awake. Safe, effective, and quickly wears off after treatment.

Oral Conscious Sedation (OCS)

stronger relaxation method where your child takes medication before the procedure, reducing anxiety while staying responsive.

IV Sedation (if needed)

For more extensive treatments, IV sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation under careful monitoring.

Built for Kids...For a Lifetime of Smiles

“I was nervous anticipating seeing my first patient at the end of my first year in dental school, and of course, it was a guy who looked like he could have been a pro football player.  It turns out he is an ex-Army Ranger.  So now I’m scared because if I hurt him, he could snap me in two like a twig.  I go to check his teeth, and he is jumpy.  I ask why and he then tells me that the dentist hurt him as a child, and he has been scared of dentists ever since.  I told him, “Well, that makes two of us.”  We laughed it out, I was patient with him, and the result was that I got him over his fear.

My mission statement is not simply to patch holes in baby teeth but for my child patients to have such a positive attitude towards dentistry that they are comfortable with the dental care as an adult.” – Dr. Scott Weinstein

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! Our pediatric sedation methods are 100% safe and administered by trained professionals. We carefully monitor your child throughout the procedure to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.
We provide different levels of sedation based on your child’s needs:
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) – Helps kids relax but keeps them awake.
Oral Conscious Sedation – A mild medication to reduce anxiety and discomfort.
IV Sedation & General Anesthesia – For more complex procedures or high anxiety.

It depends on the type of sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide & Oral Sedation keep your child awake but relaxed.
  • IV Sedation & General Anesthesia allow your child to sleep during the procedure for complete comfort.
Before sedation, we provide clear instructions, including fasting guidelines and pre-visit preparations. We’ll also answer any questions you have to ensure a smooth experience.
  • Nitrous Oxide wears off quickly—most kids feel normal within minutes.
  • Oral Sedation & IV Sedation take longer, and your child may feel drowsy for a few hours.
  • General Anesthesia requires a longer recovery—your child should rest for the day.
Many insurance plans partially or fully cover sedation, depending on the procedure. Call us at (980) 265-9408, and we’ll check your benefits for you!

Sedation is a great option for children who:
Experience severe dental anxiety
Have trouble sitting still for long treatments

What Our Patients Are Saying...

Policies

To ensure a smooth and safe sedation experience:

  • Parental Presence: We welcome parents in the back for hygiene and most operative dental procedures but we ask that only 1 parent be present and no other children during operative procedures as we want the child to be able to pay attention to instructions from Dr. Scott and staff.  While we understand that you may want to assist in the procedure, we ask that parents remain passive observers so that the child does not receive conflicting information.  Dr. Scott has been a pediatric dentist for nearly 25 years and his staff are all highly experienced in working with children with a goal of giving your child the best experience possible

  • Preoperative Instructions: Detailed guidelines will be provided prior to your appointment, including dietary restrictions and instructions on managing daily medications. Following these instructions is crucial for your child’s safety.

  • Postoperative Care: After the procedure, we’ll give you specific instructions for home care to ensure a smooth recovery for your child.

  • Insurance and Financial Policies: While we do not partner directly with private insurance companies, we provide the necessary documentation for you to submit claims. Coverage may vary, so please consult your insurance provider for details. We also offer various payment options to accommodate your needs.

  • Patient Privacy: We adhere to HIPAA regulations to protect your child’s personal and medical information, ensuring their privacy and safety.

If you have any questions or concerns about sedation dentistry at Ballantyne Pediatric Dentistry, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to provide your child with the best possible care.
